Reading Partners Dallas
Dallas began as a small prairieland frontier town and grew into one of the most diverse, economically powerful cities in the world. Over the past several decades, the Dallas Metropolitan area has seen its demographics change rapidly. Today, nearly 50% of residents in Dallas are minorities. As the population has grown, so too has the income disparity.
The Dallas Metropolitan area ranked 9th among large U.S. cities in income disparity and an overwhelming majority of the Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) students qualified for free or reduced price lunch – almost 9 out of 10 students (89%). In 2011, 89% of low-income students in Dallas could not read with proficiency.
Reading Partners is excited to be part of a community-wide movement to equip students with the reading skills they need to succeed both in school and in life. Aided by strong partnerships with Dallas ISD, the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, Commit!, and other key community partners, we’re working to ensure that all students in Dallas – no matter their background – have the opportunity to lead happy, healthy and successful lives.
In January 2012, we launched our program in Dallas at George W. Truett Elementary School and Roger Q. Mills Elementary School and served 80 students. In August 2012, we added 8 schools for a total of 10 sites. With the support of over 450 community volunteers, we met our goals and served 500 Dallas ISD elementary school students in need of literacy intervention.
In May 2013, the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees voted to continue its partnership with Reading Partners through the 2013-14 school year. Reading Partners was also awarded a multi-year Community Impact Grant from the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and will remain a UWMD Service Provider – empowering the North Texas community to change people’s lives forever – through 2016. We are looking forward to another successful school year and our ability to continually expand and reach more students in need of literacy invention in Dallas and beyond.
