North Texas

Reading Partners has been a part of the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) educational landscape since 2012, when we launched our program at two elementary schools in Dallas ISD, serving 80 students. Since then, we’ve placed thousands of community volunteers in systemically disadvantaged school communities to help kids master basic reading skills. Our one-on-one tutoring model empowers students to succeed in reading and in life by engaging community volunteers to provide individualized, personal attention to each student in our program.

The challenge in north Texas is significant. One of the most economically powerful urban areas in the world, DFW has seen its population grow rapidly. As the population has grown, so too has the income disparity. According to the results of the 2019 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), only 14 percent of fourth-graders experiencing economic disadvantages in North Texas are proficient readers for their grade level.

Reading Partners believes that all children deserve the opportunity to succeed. Through our strong partnerships with school districts, including Dallas ISD and Fort Worth ISD, as well as community partners such as the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, Commit!, and the Rainwater Charitable Foundation, we’re working to ensure that all students in North Texas – no matter their background – have the opportunity to lead happy, healthy, and successful lives.

Facing a school year of uncertainty due to COVID-19 in 2020-21, Reading Partners collaborated with teachers and school leaders to meet students’ learning needs, including creating an innovative online tutoring program that can be used to support students when in-person tutoring is not an option. Reading Partners will also continue to invest in family engagement programs and race equity, diversity, and inclusion training for volunteers, staff, and AmeriCorps members to ensure that we are thoroughly supporting students and communities as we emerge from the pandemic and well into the future.
