Reading Partners New York

About Us

Impact Graphic_New YorkHome to the country’s largest school district with over one million enrolled students, it’s fitting that New York’s famous nickname evokes the classic symbol of teachers: the apple. Yet despite New York’s promise that you can make a brand new start of it, tens of thousands of students don’t have the reading skills they need to take that chance. In 2011, 69% of fourth graders from low-income homes failed to meet grade-level standards in reading. This represents just a small uptick from the City-wide average, where 71% of all fourth graders could not proficiently read grade-level texts.

We believe that every student in New York City can be king of the hill and we’re dedicated to taking a bite out of New York’s literacy crisis. Relying on strong partnerships with the New York Department of Education and other community-based organizations, we’re working to change the tune for struggling elementary students across the city.

Reading Partners brought its program to New York City in the fall of 2011 thanks to a partnership with The Heckscher Foundation for Children. In its inaugural year, 300 volunteers joined Reading Partners to tutor 307 students in seven schools across Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens. Our first cohort of students had a standout year in their reading development as 88% of them increased their rate of learning and 71% narrowed their achievement gap to their peers. In 2013-14, we’ve grown to 12 schools and are on track to serve over 650 students with the help of nearly 715 volunteer tutors.
