Spotlight on a Pair

Samuel is a first grade student at College Park Elementary School in San Mateo. He likes riding horses, bicycles, and playing soccer. He loves being around children of all ages, and one of his favorite places to visit is the library. He always starts his days with a big smile, and cannot go to bed without reading a book in the company of his mom.
Samuel is a highly motivated child who really enjoys reading and the challenging himself to learn new vocabulary. His tutor, Susan Luntz, tutored him twice a week throughout the entire school year and feels very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Samuel.
Over the year, Samuel made excellent progress. He started reading at the kindergarten level, and finished the year reading like a second grader. In nine months of tutoring, Samuel missed only one session. At the beginning of the year, he had only a few words in his sight vocabulary. Now he can sound out dozens of two syllable words! He enjoys reading at home and takes great pride in the fact he has returned more book reports than anyone else in the tutoring program. He took a book home after every session, and ALWAYS returned his completed reading response forms, completing 67 book reports! Congratulations Samuel- you have become such a strong reader!
