Curriculum
Volunteers work with Reading Partners' structured curriculum to help students gain multiple literacy skills and concepts.Developed by Education Specialists:
The curriculum was developed by educational specialists at Reading Partners in consultation with the faculty and graduate students at the Stanford School of Education and is based on best teaching practices, grade-level requirements and a balanced-literacy approach. The Reading Partners curriculum meets the content standards set by the California Department of Education.Short Lessons for Student & Volunteer Success:
Developed in over 150 short modules, each lesson is easy-to-follow, requires no preparation and offers flexibility for the volunteer to work creatively to meet the needs of each child.Three Levels of Curriculum for Three Levels of Skill:
A few children in the program are learning to recognize the letters of the alphabet and the sounds each letter makes. A great majority of Reading Partners students are either beginning readers learning high-frequency words, fluency and phonics, or comprehension readers learning concepts such as the difference between fantasy and realism and story components such as characters, setting and plot. Once students are assessed, they are placed in the curriculum suited to their skill level.Structured Lessons Cover Multiple Literacy Skills:
The lesson begins with the tutor reading aloud to the student from a book the child has selected. Tutor and student discuss the book.
The tutor introduces a new skill and an exercise to practice the skill.
The student reads aloud from a book selected to develop the new skill. Tutor and student discuss the book.
The student completes an exercise based on the book.
The tutor notes vocabulary words that are new to the student and works on vocabulary as appropriate.
