Reading Partners SF Bay Area
The Bay Area enjoys the highest per capita GDP in the world — $74,815, higher than London and Singapore. Yet, one in five Bay Area residents live below the poverty line. In Oakland, 30% of children live in poverty. Without an excellent education, there’s little chance the next generation will be able to break this cycle of poverty.
Reading Partners believes that all children deserve the opportunity to succeed. Partnering with Bay Area community members and leaders from local school districts, we’re working towards a future where every child has the individualized support they need to become strong readers and lifelong learners.
Since 1999, Reading Partners has been successfully providing volunteer-led,
one-on-one literacy tutoring to K-5 students at low-income elementary schools
in the Bay Area. Last year, 86% of students in our program accelerated their rate
of learning. We currently operate 26 reading
centers across San Francisco and East Bay.
In the 2013-14 school year:
- 86% of Reading Partners San Francisco and East Bay students accelerated their rate of learning in reading.
- 68% of Reading Partners San Francisco and East Bay students narrowed their literacy gaps with their peers who read at grade level.
