My road to volunteering with Reading Partners

Back to National Volunteer Week blog

Lois Lunsford, volunteer reading partner in Sacramento, CA

I heard about Reading Partners through a friend who is a successful children’s book author. I too am an aspiring author, which I pursue on a part time basis. I love to read, and I am a teacher at a small school where we do a lot of reading. I have been a teacher for a long time and want to give back by helping children understand how important it is to learn to read, and do it well.

My favorite part of helping children is to encourage them to do better whatever it is in life. My student tries really hard to do his best, he is eager to learn new things, and he inspires me to keep helping him. I am very proud of him when he keeps trying to get it right. As a part time teacher I have spare time, which allows me to go help a powerful organization like Reading Partners. I am very proud to be part of the solution to reading literacy! Thank you for allowing me to help.
