It takes a village to raise a child

Back to National Volunteer Week blog

By: Lorraine Hoster, volunteer reading partner in Twin Cities, MN
Pearson employee, in partnership with #ProjectLiteracy

Pearson TCI am a reading partner at the Benjamin E. Mays IB World School located in St. Paul, MN. I write this as a common noun because we are all partners in this school built on the idea that it takes a village to raise a child. Dr. Benjamin E. Mays himself benefitted from early literacy; his sister taught him to read before he entered school. He grew up to be an influential world leader. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr considered him to be both a “spiritual mentor” and an “intellectual father.” I read and learn with more than one student at the school because I am a part of the village, and I feel blessed to belong in this way.
