How to Get Started

Volunteers comment that getting started to tutor at Reading Partners is easy and organized.

1. Sign Up Online

2. Complete online New Tutor Orientation (40 minutes)

3. Sign Tutor Code of Conduct

Because of the sensitivities of working with children, we ask all tutors to sign our Tutor Code of Conduct before tutoring. You'll learn more about the Code during your new tutor orientation and when you first visit your local reading center.

If you are under the age of 18, you must be in high school and must have your parent/guardian sign the Tutor Code of Conduct.

4. Complete Fingerprint Background Check

Working with children requires a background check. Therefore, all tutors are required to get a Live Scan fingerprint check. You will receive more information about how to complete this step when we confirm your first shadow session at your local center session.

When you are confirmed for the date and time of your shadow session, a Reading Partners staff member will give you information about where you can get your Live Scan background check. The cost is normally around $20, but you can request to be reimbursed for the cost of your Live Scan.

5. Some School Districts Require a TB Test

Depending on the school location, you may be required to get a TB test. If required, a Reading Partners staff member will help you with this during your shadow session.
