NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – June, 24, 2024 – Reading Partners South Carolina, in partnership with The Vent Program, has launched a “Learn and Play Chess” event series aimed at enhancing both chess skills and literacy for children in the Lowcountry.

The first of these events, which was held in early June at Reading Partners’ North Charleston headquarters, brought together about 20 young chess enthusiasts and seasoned chess instructors.

Following the success of this event, Reading Partners is excited to announce the continuation of the series with a “Learn & Play” event on July 7 and a youth chess tournament on Aug. 4. These events aim to further engage school-age players and enhance their chess skills in a supportive community setting.

“Combining chess with literacy not only makes learning more enjoyable, but also develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for reading and beyond,” said Victoria Felder, Community Engagement Manager at Reading Partners South Carolina. “This event is especially impactful as it introduces children of color to chess, promoting diversity and inclusion in a game that sharpens their academic and life skills.”

Clyde McDaniel of The Vent Program added, “This collaboration showcases the power of community partnerships in enriching educational experiences for children. By integrating chess with literacy, we offer a unique and impactful approach to learning.”

Parents and youth are encouraged to register for the events at Community members are encouraged to enjoy a fun and educational experience that blends chess and literacy in a dynamic, inclusive environment.
