Learning Tuesdays | National Initiatives - Local Impact: One Year In and A Strong Future

Originally posted on The Campaign for Grade-Level Reading’s YouTube channel

Responding to early reports of significant pandemic-precipitated learning loss, the U.S. Department of Education launched two national initiatives aimed at accelerating equitable learning recovery through proven-effective strategies in the summer of 2022. The Engage Every Student (EES) initiative increases high quality out-of-school time and summer learning opportunities for every child who wants to participate. The National Partnership for Student Success (NPSS) expands high impact tutoring, along with mentoring and coaching with the goal of engaging 250,000 additional adults in these roles.

Recent data from the Education Recovery Scorecard showing that the average U.S. public elementary school student lost the equivalent of a half year of learning in math and a quarter of a year in reading during pandemic school closures underscores the importance of these interventions to accelerate equitable learning recovery. After a year of operations, and with a new school year launching, we will examine the early impact of these initiatives and explore how to leverage these initiatives to ensure more students receive the support they need in local communities. CGLR has invited the leaders who introduced the initiatives last year to join us as we look back on the 2022-2023 school year and share successes and challenges in local communities, the impact on learning recovery and the plans to sustain and deepen the impact of these initiatives throughout 2024 and beyond.
