Putting Their Hands Up for Reading

Students at Public School 188 in Manhattan had a chance to talk with Schools Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott when he paid a visit to the Lower East Side elementary school Wednesday to stress the importance of reading.

Mr. Walcott was also at the school to introduce Reading Partners, a nonprofit volunteer tutoring program intended to improve literacy levels in elementary school students who are six months to two years behind in reading. The program operates in California and Washington, and it is now coming to seven New York City schools.
