Meet our wonderful supporters: Shilpi Niyogi and Larry Kinton

With tutoring in full swing this fall, we are keenly aware of the amount of effort it takes to advance our ever-important mission each and every day as we work to mitigate the impacts of the pandemic. From volunteer tutors and AmeriCorps members who stand on the front lines of our program, to thoughtful board members, generous donors, and dedicated staff whose contributions behind the scenes keep our program running smoothly, we are truly grateful to be a part of an engaged and inspiring community of people who believe in educational equity for all.

Today, we’d like you to meet two of our amazing supporters, Shilpi and Larry, who shared with us a little more about their passion for education and why they think that supporting children’s literacy programs like ours is critical. We hope that their insights resonate with you and serve as proof that we can all make a difference for students learning a skill that will last a lifetime.

Shilpi and Larry, how did you first get involved with Reading Partners?

Shilpi: I first learned about Reading Partners about 10-12 years ago while I worked at Pearson and headed up our DC office. Both our DC office locally and the company nationally were engaged with Reading Partners’ broad and deep efforts to improve literacy skills for all kids across all our communities.

Larry: I became aware of Reading Partners through Facebook. My involvement is based on a strong belief in the value of education. I also wanted to support a local organization focused on the development of critical learning skills.

What is your favorite part of our program and why did you decide to support it through a financial contribution?

Shilpi: My favorite part about the Reading Partners program is that it is designed around young readers. I decided to support it financially because I appreciate Reading Partners’ strong commitment to using scientific research and an evidence-based approach in program design, evaluation, and continuous improvement.

Larry: I love the inclusiveness and focus on diversity within the program. Personalized training with a dedicated mentor is another favorite feature. Children learn at different levels and providing assistance for those that require more time is critical to optimize understanding and development.

I believe in donating to organizations that support the needs of the local community, and I am especially committed to programs and organizations that support youth development. Every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential. A strong foundation of reading skills is paramount to achieving that goal.

Could you identify the values that guide your giving?

Shilpi: I’m a first-generation American immigrant from a well-educated—but far from wealthy—Indian family. My whole life and career are grounded in the belief that access to a good education is the critical lever for achieving personal ambitions, advancing economic mobility, and accelerating positive social change. I believe that together, we could create a brighter, fairer future for all our kids.

Larry: I support organizations that strive to make a difference, especially in underserved communities. I also appreciate realistic assessment and identification of where and what resources are most needed to deliver impactful results. Educational equity is important because children have different foundations and resources for learning before and after they begin formal education. Every child should have an equal opportunity for success, and I hope my gift can help the Reading Partners program perform at a high level by providing resources, supplies, and tools needed to enhance students’ reading and learning skills so they can flourish academically.

Thank you again, Shilpi and Larry, for your generous gifts to support Reading Partners students’ learning!
