Tutor Spotlight: Leroy Lindo

Leroy Lindo, the former commander of police in San Francisco, California, is no stranger to a life of service. After leading the police department, Leroy wanted to stay active and give back in his retirement.  That’s when he found Reading Partners, and for the last five years, he has gone far beyond his call of duty to serve the students in our area.

“I have used a variety of approaches to motivate my students.  When learning about sequence of events, I ask the student to tell me about their favorite movie, pretend that I didn’t see it, and ask them to tell me about the movie making sure that I ask “what happened next” to reinforce the concept of sequencing.

I also like to allow the student to tell me how they think they did with the lesson.  I encourage them to tell me what they liked best about our time together and what they liked the least. This self-evaluation technique allows me the opportunity to value the student’s opinion.”

Leroy’s Impact Statements

#1 Never say “I can’t do that.” It closes the mind to challenge itself.

#2 “Don’t ever give up”.  Doing your best is always a better choice.

#3 “Reading is Knowledge; Knowledge is Power.”

#4 “The only way to get better at reading is by reading.”

With over 150 hours served, and numerous children impacted by his service with us, we are so fortunate to have a passionate, dedicated tutor like Leroy to empower our students to become lifelong learners.
