Smart policies are needed at the local, state, and federal level in order to sustain our work of providing students with the literacy support they need to succeed.
On our agenda: Federal funding for AmeriCorps programs
The White House’s proposed FY18 budget calls for the elimination of the Corporation for National and Community Service, AmeriCorps, and Senior Corps despite overwhelming public support and eight decades of strong bipartisan legislative support for national service.
For Reading Partners, the impact of losing AmeriCorps funding would be devastating. Our annual AmeriCorps revenue is $5.4M, or 15% of our total budget. This covers over 350 AmeriCorps members, reaching 14 metropolitan areas, and serving approximately 11,000 students. Here’s what you can do to save AmeriCorps:
1. Contact your members of Congress
Contact your members of Congress daily and urge them to protect funding for national service. Let them know how important these programs are to your community:
2. Spread the word!
Share on social media, ask your friends to get involved, and write a letter to the editor (view/download our op-ed toolkit).
