Honoring the heart of our mission: 2024-25 Valued Volunteer Award Winners

April 17, 2025

At Reading Partners Tulsa, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to become a confident reader and a lifelong learner. Since launching our program locally in 2013, Reading Partners has impacted 9,390 students through the support of over 9,900 community volunteers, culminating in 387,373 sessions of individualized literacy instruction—thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the unwavering support of our community.

Each year, we recognize those who go above and beyond to make our mission possible. The Valued Volunteer Awards celebrate outstanding individuals, partners, and schools who exemplify the spirit of service, collaboration, and commitment to student success. Join us in honoring the remarkable winners of the 2024-25 Valued Volunteer Awards—each one a champion for literacy in Tulsa.

Reading Matters Award: John Miller

Reading truly matters—and no one demonstrates that more clearly than John Miller, one of our dedicated volunteer tutors. A steadfast tutor based at Kerr Elementary, John went above and beyond when one of his students transferred to another school within our network. Rather than say goodbye, he signed up to tutor at the student’s new location and continued tutoring at Kerr. Today, John tutors at an incredible four reading centers across Tulsa! His commitment to our students and their success speaks volumes. We are deeply grateful for his heart, time, and incredible flexibility.

Together We Are Better Award: Amanda Pauley

Amanda Pauley is the definition of a team player. Her steadfast commitment to her students has made a lasting difference this year. Going the extra mile—literally—Amanda added Friday sessions to her schedule to give her students even more one-on-one support. Her consistency and relationship-building have paid off in a big way: Her primary student made incredible gains, jumping two full grade levels in reading by midyear. Amanda’s caring, reliable presence proves that we’re truly better together.

Laughter Keeps Us Going Award: Janet Solis Lopez

A key ingredient in the learning process is joy, and Janet Solis Lopez brings it in abundance. Every Thursday, she shares laughter, encouragement, and connection with her student, Iris*. Their bond is unmistakable—Iris* looks forward to their time together so much that she even brought her mom to Reading Partners just to meet “Ms. Janet.” With her positive energy and genuine investment in her student’s growth, Janet helps make literacy fun and meaningful.

Big Challenges Are Our Thing Award: Mitch O’Farrell

Mitch O’Farrell is a tutor who doesn’t just meet challenges—he embraces them. A reliable presence at his reading center, Mitch works with two first-grade students and adapts seamlessly to their changing needs and moods. Whether energizing a sleepy learner with movement or turning a lesson into a game, Mitch’s creative and empathetic approach inspires real results. He’s also the go-to volunteer when a particularly tough tutoring session arises, often succeeding where others have struggled. From thoughtful gestures like bringing maps and a globe to spark student curiosity, to helping his students make significant reading progress, Mitch’s dedication leaves a lasting mark.

Data Drives Decisions Award: Darnaby Elementary

Darnaby Elementary stands out as a school partner that exemplifies the power of data-informed action. Their team consistently uses student reading data to identify needs and match the proper support, making strategic decisions that enhance student growth. Their collaboration with Reading Partners reflects a shared commitment to outcomes and a belief in every student’s potential. Additionally, Darnaby warmly welcomes each volunteer and Reading Partners staff member into their building, recognizing the impact of community on student learning. We are honored to work alongside such a focused and forward-thinking school community.

Volunteers Get Results Award: Harvard Avenue Christian Church

Harvard Avenue Christian Church has been an anchor of support for McClure Elementary and the Reading Partners program. Their dedicated volunteers show up week after week, forming strong, consistent relationships with students and helping drive tangible gains in reading achievement. The church’s commitment to service is deeply felt and truly makes a difference. Thanks to their efforts, students are not only improving their reading skills but also gaining confidence and joy in learning.

Thank you to every volunteer, partner, and supporter who helps bring our mission to life. Your impact reaches far beyond the classroom and into the future of each student you serve. Together, we’re building a more literate, empowered Tulsa—one reader at a time.
