With a passion for reading and community service, April was looking for a volunteer opportunity to accommodate her busy schedule. She learned about Reading Partners after attending a United Way Day of Service and quickly signed up to tutor. She was nervous at first but found that with the curriculum clearly laid out for her, it was easy for her to jump right into the lessons. As her student’s reading skills and confidence grew, so did April’s understanding that she was making a real difference.
When April returned for her second year of volunteering she brought folks with her. Her passion for Reading Partners sparked the interest of her Constellation Energy co-workers, who decided to volunteer to become reading partners alongside her.
Reading Partners staff visited Constellation’s office for a brief tutor training, delivered directly to a group of new volunteers over their lunch hour. Within a few weeks, 13 new and excited reading partners were helping struggling readers succeed: All thanks to April’s enthusiasm for Reading Partners.
