Finding a new sense of self

Back to National Volunteer Week blog

By: Jim Byrd, volunteer reading partner in Dallas, TX

Why do I tutor?…

After losing Mary, I lost all purpose and identity and felt a huge void in my life. I kept hearing and reading I needed to reach out and begin re-involving myself in the world but nothing seemed to fit. I remembered talking with several who tutored last year and found such satisfaction, I thought that may be a place for me to begin.

What a total blessing being a reading partner has been for me. I love working with the kids and watching their pleasure in learning. The curriculum instructions and tips are excellent, effective, and easy to apply. I enjoy being part of such an important program for these children.
