3rd Annual Sonny Boy’s 5K — A Walk for Literacy
October 31, 2024
Sonny Boy’s 5K — A Walk for Literacy” is an annual event that both celebrates the life of Silas Grant Sr. and helps raise awareness of the critical fight against illiteracy. Silas Grant Sr., who remained functionally illiterate until his passing in October 2021 at 81, served as an inspiration for his son, Silas Grant Jr. His fathers’s legacy has fueled Silas Jr.’s dedication to fighting illiteracy. As a member of the Reading Partners DC (RPDC) advisory board, volunteer tutor, and the host of this annual event starting in 2022, Silas Jr. has been instrumental in raising over $30,000 to bolster the organization’s outreach.
Silas Jr. has used his time on the board and as a tutor to raise awareness about the organization’s work, one-on-one literacy tutoring program, particularly in supporting students from DC Public and Public Charter Schools. He has taken a special interest in engaging volunteer-tutors from the communities reflective of the students served, helping RPDC to partner with as many students, schools, and organizations as possible.
Silas Jr. is also a passionate walker and the founder of the “One Step Walking Club.” This walking club advocates for safe community walking, meeting twice a week for a 3-mile walk. The Grant family’s enthusiasm for walking and community health led Silas Jr. to create “Sonny Boy’s 5K — A Walk for Literacy.” This event stands as a tribute to his late father and combines a love of walking and fitness with the fight against illiteracy.
