Join our reading advocacy events

Reading is the very foundation of all learning and acts as a springboard for success in school and in life. Unfortunately, right now…

68% of all third graders in South Carolina are scoring below the readiness mark for reading.

When we look at fourth graders from low income families, the number of students reading below grade level surges to nearly eight out of ten.

This March, join us in taking a stand for the children of South Carolina by learning more about reading in our state and calling for strategic investments in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade reading that will pay dividends for future generations. We’ll be hosting two events to call attention to the state of reading in South Carolina.

Race to reading proficiency: Tri-County town hall

RRP

Our kickoff event, the literacy town hall, will be a time when Lowcountry policy makers, education experts, and community partners can come together to discuss the importance of PK-5 literacy and hear about some of the steps being taken here to make sure every child is reading at grade level.

Reading Partners and the Tri-County Cradle to Career Collaborative (TCCC) are excited to partner to make sure this event is a successful one.

Rally for reading: Trip to the State Capitol

Rally for Reading 2

We’ll be taking our message to state leaders and policy makers at the South Carolina State House in Columbia. You are invited to join us on the “Rally for Reading” bus to the State Capitol. At the capitol, we’ll meet with lawmakers and attend key legislative sessions. Participants (like you) will share their stories of success and support to raise awareness and secure funding for the Reading Partners program.

Your voice matters greatly in this work. Hearing directly from constituents makes an enormous difference in how lawmakers vote. We need all hands on deck!

Event details

When: Wednesday, March 16, 2016 from 8 am – 4 pm

Where: Meet us at Belk Department Store’s parking lot at the Northwoods Mall (map) in North Charleston. We’ll leave from there to head by bus to the State Capitol.

The bus and lunch will be complimentary.
