Reading Partners SF/East Bay
About Us
The Bay Area enjoys the highest per capita GDP in the world–$74,815, higher than London and Singapore. Yet, one in five Bay Area residents live below the poverty line. In Oakland, 30% of children live in poverty. Without an excellent education, there’s little chance the next generation will be able to break this cycle of poverty.
Reading Partners believes that all children deserve the opportunity to succeed. Partnering with Bay Area community members and leaders from local school districts, we’re working towards a future where every child has the individualized support they need to become strong readers and lifelong learners.
Since 1999, Reading Partners has been successfully providing volunteer-led, one-on-one literacy tutoring to K-5 students at low-income elementary schools in the Bay Area. Last year, 88% of students in our program accelerated their rate of learning and 74% finished the year closer to grade level, narrowing the achievement gap to their on-grade level peers. We currently operate nineteen reading centers across San Francisco, East Bay, and Marin.
