NBA Warriors Read to Achieve

Olympic Gold Medalist and Literacy Champion Kristi Yamaguchi and Warriors forward Kevon Looney join Reading Partners students at Cesar Chavez Elementary in March 2019 in the Warriors Read to Achieve Reading Rally, presented by Ross Dress for Less.

Reading Partners SF Bay Area is proud to be a community partner of the Golden State Warriors Community Foundation and the Read to Achieve Program, presented by Ross Dress for Less. Each school year, Warriors players like Kevon Looney and Quinn Cook come to our partner schools for “Reading Rallies,” where students have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to read on stage with their heroes and celebrate the joy of reading. Students recite the Read to Achieve pledge, as our championship team lets them know how important it is to practice reading. And it certainly is important.

Studies show that students who can read at grade level by fourth grade are four times more likely to graduate from high school. Fourth grade also marks an important transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn,” meaning that it is critical for students to have mastered foundational reading skills so they won’t fall behind their classmates in learning throughout the day.

We’re thrilled to partner with the Warriors and appreciate their commitment to modeling the importance of reading and learning for our students and community. And hard work is something the Warriors players know all about – to become a champion, you have to start at the beginning and practice those skills!

Read to Achieve Pledge:

Reading is fun and books are cool too, I will read a book daily to learn something new.

I will learn different words and I will listen in school, When teachers read stories and share reading rules.

I will practice my skills in every way, Reading is something I will do every day.

Reading offers great adventures to me, Reading will help me be the best I can be.
